Mickie James Retains Women’s Title at Night of Champions
: June 30th, 2008
In what was obviously the expected result, reigning WWE Women’s Champion Mickie James successfully defended her title against aspiring diva, Katie Lee Burchill. From the start, everyone knew how this was going to be as Burchill is a virtual newbie in the WWE with not much credential to go with her title aspirations. You may even call it a fluke challenge to which she just filled in for the challenger vacancy while the ongoing feud between former champions Melina and Beth Phoenix was in the works.
It is without question that James was the favored diva in this match-up. Imagine James beating out Phoenix for the gold a few months ago and then going up against a virtual rookie in Burchill? So many were leaving a little door for an upset. But really, what would Burchill do as a champion? I don’t think she even has a fan following that will solidly support her to date.
Burchill will get there. But for the meantime, let the pros take center stage of it all. She showed a lot of heart but seriously, James is a tried and tested champion. You don’t become a champion out of pure chance and luck and I guess Mickie James proved that with style.
However, with Melina suffering an injury, there is a large possibility that Beth Phoenix will finally get a rematch for the gold. With no obstacle in sight (except for the draft maybe), James may soon be pitted against Phoenix, the same diva she won the title from.
